Real Elopement Day Schedules
Elopement Day Schedules
Almost all of my elopements are planned around beautiful light. In the redwoods, I generally aim to begin about three hours before sunset, depending on the season and the grove. On cloudy days, when plans are simple and flexible, I may recommend starting one to two hours earlier to make the most of the available light.
Before choosing a schedule, think about what you want your experience to include: a ceremony with an officiant, private vows, portraits after a courthouse wedding, or a combination of these. You might want to stay entirely in the redwoods or explore multiple locations, ending at the coast near sunset. A cake cutting, picnic, first look, or specific portraits—such as a cathedral veil draped over the two of you—can all be worked into the plan with enough time.
About 75% of my couples choose to get legally married in their home state or at the local courthouse earlier that day or a day or two before. They then put on their wedding outfits and save their personal vows for our time together. Many plan a reception with friends and family back home at a later date. This gives them space to enjoy a simple, intimate experience centered around each other.
A few things to consider as you look through these examples:
Hair and makeup: About 25% of my clients choose professional hair and makeup. Late-morning appointments that finish in the early afternoon often work well. Depending on your photography start time, finishing two to five hours beforehand leaves time to eat, get dressed, and travel without feeling rushed. I recommend confirming your photography timeline before booking your appointment.
Your ceremony time: Once an officiant is booked, moving the ceremony may be difficult, so it helps to discuss timing with me first. Having a friend lead your private vow exchange can offer more flexibility in your day if you’re wanting to work around best light.
Travel between locations: Driving, parking, walking to each spot, and getting in and out of the car in wedding attire all take time. I’ll help you plan these transitions so you can relax and enjoy the experience.
Guests: If you’re inviting loved ones, we’ll allow time for their arrival, the ceremony, and group photos. Consider how comfortably everyone can walk to your chosen location.
Personal details: Tell me about meaningful traditions, special items, or particular photos you’re hoping for during our planning call so I can make time for them.
Weather and flexibility: A little flexibility can make a beautiful difference, especially with changing coastal weather. Any timing adjustments will be discussed with you and coordinated around your booked vendors.
A theme or creative direction: You can bring a theme into your elopement through your outfits, florals, and meaningful details. Whether you’re drawn to a fairytale, a favorite movie, or a vintage feel, share your ideas during our planning call so I can help bring them into your photos.
Permits: If you’re already legally married, you can keep things simple with couple’s portraits (in all your wedding attire!) instead of an on-site ceremony. A ceremony with friends and family present requires a wedding permit at state park locations.
The schedules below are examples from real elopement days. Your timeline will be tailored to your locations, the light, and what matters most to you. During our planning call, I can help you choose the exact spots and finalize your schedule and location pins before your day.
