A Dream Redwood Elopement in the Avenue of the Giants
If you've ever dreamed of exchanging vows beneath towering redwoods while sunlight pours through the forest, this is exactly why couples travel to Humboldt County.
The day couldn't have been more perfect. Warm sunshine, a gentle breeze, and temperatures around 75 degrees created the most beautiful atmosphere for an intimate redwood elopement. We arrived at the Avenue of the Giants about three hours before sunset, giving us plenty of time to wander through the ancient forest and create romantic, whimsical portraits before the ceremony began.
One of the things I love most about photographing elopements is having the freedom to slow down. Instead of rushing from one event to the next, we explored the forest together, allowing every photograph to feel intentional, cinematic, and full of emotion. The towering redwoods became more than just a backdrop—they became part of the story.
The details elevated the entire experience. Beautiful faux florals by Gracefully Bloomed added the perfect touch of color while protecting the natural beauty of the redwood forest, where fresh florals aren't permitted. The bride's flowing Selkie gown felt as though it had been made for this setting. Every breeze brought the dress to life, creating graceful movement that gave each photograph an ethereal, storybook quality. Paired with a cathedral-length veil, there were endless opportunities to play with light, movement, and the grandeur of the forest.
As the evening approached, the forest transformed. Sunlight streamed through the ancient trees in breathtaking beams, illuminating the couple as they exchanged heartfelt vows. It was one of those rare moments that photographers dream about—soft, glowing light filtering through the canopy, wrapping the entire scene in warmth and romance. The atmosphere felt peaceful, intimate, and almost otherworldly.
Part II: From the Redwoods to the Beach
But the story didn't end beneath the redwoods.
After spending the first part of their elopement wandering through the ancient forest and exchanging vows beneath the trees, we made our way to Samoa Beach in Humboldt County for an entirely different setting. This is one of my favorite things about planning an extended elopement in Humboldt County—you don't have to choose between the redwoods and the coast. You can have both.
By the time we reached the dunes, the sun was beginning its slow descent toward the horizon. A soft coastal breeze moved through the tall grasses, creating gentle waves across the dunes and adding just the right amount of movement to the photographs. Her dress caught the wind, their hair moved softly around them, and everything felt effortless and romantic.
Then a flock of pelicans flew overhead.
It was such a perfectly Humboldt County moment—quiet, unexpected, and completely beautiful. Rather than rushing through the portraits, we let the evening unfold around us. They wandered through the dunes, played in the sand, laughed together, and simply enjoyed having this little piece of the evening to themselves.
As the sun dipped lower, the colors and atmosphere began to change. The warm golden light slowly faded into blue hour, giving the beach an entirely different feeling. What had started as a bright, sunlit summer evening became softer, moodier, and more cinematic.
And then came the lanterns.
As the last bit of daylight disappeared, we brought out the lanterns and continued creating portraits along the beach. The glow of the lanterns against the deepening blue sky felt almost like stepping into another world. The photographs became darker, more atmospheric, and incredibly romantic—almost as if the two of them had wandered into the final scene of a fairytale.
This is exactly why a 3–4 hour elopement is one of my favorite ways to photograph a wedding day.
Instead of trying to squeeze an entire story into one hour, we have time to let the day breathe. We can begin beneath the towering redwoods while the sunlight streams through the trees, create beautiful portraits and document the vows, then travel to the coast and finish beneath the evening sky.
Two locations. Two completely different moods. Multiple kinds of beautiful light. One entire story.
The redwoods feel ancient and enchanted. The beach feels wild and romantic. Blue hour feels cinematic. And when the lanterns come out, the whole evening takes on that little bit of magic that makes you wonder if you've stepped into a fairytale.
