Surprise Engagement -Everything you need to know
You’re ready to propose—congrats! Now let’s plan it in a way that feels natural, meaningful, and beautifully documented. I’ll walk you through each step so you don’t have to overthink a thing.
1. Book Your Photographer
Start by reaching out and locking in your date with me. From there, I’ll help guide you through everything else—location, timing, and the overall plan—so it all comes together seamlessly.
2. Pick a Meaningful Location
We’ll choose a location together that fits your story. Whether that’s the redwoods, the coast, dunes, or open prairie, I’ll help you find a spot that feels personal, has beautiful light, and gives you the right amount of privacy for the moment.
3. Dress for the Moment
You want her to feel confident and look incredible without suspecting anything. One of the easiest ways to do this is to plan something afterward—a nice dinner, celebration, or “special occasion” that naturally calls for dressing up.
Colors like white, cream, and neutrals photograph beautifully.
Flowing dresses with movement create soft, romantic images.
If she asks what to wear, you can gently guide her without giving away the surprise—and I’m always happy to help you think through this ahead of time.
4. Timing Is Everything
I’ll help you choose the best time of day so everything looks and feels just right. Golden hour or just before sunset is ideal, when the light is soft, warm, and flattering.
In the redwoods, this often means timing it when light filters through the trees and creates that dreamy, dappled glow. On the coast, we’ll aim for sunset over the ocean for a more open, golden backdrop.
Together, we’ll make sure your proposal is timed beautifully—so it feels effortless in the moment and looks incredible in your photos.
HOW THE SURPRISE PROPOSAL ACTUALLY WORKS
Once you’ve booked your photographer and chosen your location, we’ll make a simple plan so everything feels natural and stress-free. I’ll help you choose a redwood location in Humboldt County with good light, privacy, and a natural place to pause.
From there, you can pick the approach that fits you best:
The “Casual Walk” Plan
You’ll take a walk together through the redwoods while I follow at a distance (sometimes I’ll wear a bight red jacket so you’ll know it’s me). When you reach the spot that feels right, you stop, take it in, and get down on one knee. I’ll be ready, capturing the moment as it naturally unfolds.
The “Photoshoot” Plan
We plan a relaxed couples session so your partner thinks it’s just photos. I’ll guide you through natural prompts, and I’ll give you a subtle cue so you know exactly when it’s time to propose. This is one of the easiest and most seamless ways to pull off a surprise engagement.
The “Set Location” Plan
You choose a specific spot and time, and I’ll already be there waiting. You walk up, take in the view, and propose—simple, intentional, and beautifully documented.
No matter which option you choose, I’ll help guide the timing, lighting, and location so your surprise engagement in the redwoods feels effortless, personal, and true to you—while making sure every moment is captured in a way that lasts.
Pro Tips
Stay Down on One Knee
Even if she kneels too, stay down! This ensures your photographer can capture every angle of the moment.
Position Yourself to Capture HER Reaction
Kneel slightly angled toward her with your back to the photographer. This way, we get her full reaction—joy, surprise, everything.
Soak in the Moment
You don’t need to look at the camera or pose immediately. Hug, laugh, talk, and enjoy the moment together—it’s yours.
Let Your Photographer Take the Lead
After the “yes,” you don’t need to think about what comes next. I’ll gently step in and guide you, creating space for natural moments while making sure everything feels easy, comfortable, and beautifully captured.
Optional Fun Props to Bring:
Champagne and glasses
Flowers
A note to read before proposing
A “She Said Yes” sign
A special ring box
Jake and Sam’s Surprise Engagement in the Avenue of the giants
Bull Creek Trail, February, 2026
A REAL EXAMPLE: A REDWOOD TRAIL PROPOSAL
To give you a real idea of how this can look, I worked with Jake to plan a surprise engagement in the redwoods of Humboldt County. Jake and his girlfriend had been together for six years and traveled from Texas for this moment. They both love traveling and being outdoors, and she had always dreamed of getting engaged in the redwoods—so he made that dream happen.
We chose a quiet trail where they could walk together without drawing attention. I wore red and brought my daughter with me so we could blend in naturally at the trailhead and along the path.
They started their walk, and I followed at a distance, keeping everything relaxed and unnoticeable. After a few minutes, Jake found a private spot along the trail, paused, and got down on one knee. The moment unfolded naturally—quiet, emotional, and completely theirs.
After they had a few minutes to soak it all in, I stepped in, introduced myself, and we transitioned right into a redwood engagement session. It felt seamless, intentional, and gave them both the surprise proposal and beautiful photos to remember it by.
“Bethany wasn't just a competent photographer, but she was also very kind and thoughtful; My fiancee and I came from out of state, and she was super helpful with the surprise planning and location of the shoot, not to mention the actual shoot itself! 5 Stars fs!”
-Jake
Miles and Chrissy’s Surprise Engagement in Trinidad
College Cove, Trinidad. November 2025
A REAL EXAMPLE: A COASTAL PROPOSAL AT COLLEGE COVE
Myles and Chrissy had been together for six years and traveled from Redding for their surprise engagement in Humboldt County. College Cove was already a meaningful place to them—somewhere they had visited before—so it made the moment feel even more personal. Myles planned a nice dinner afterward, which meant Chrissy arrived dressed up without suspecting a thing.
We chose a time that would give us beautiful light, and I casually followed them down to the beach from a distance with my daughter so we could blend in naturally. It turned out to be one of those rare, warm days on the Humboldt County coast—calm, golden, and clear.
Myles led her to a quiet corner of the cove, away from other people, and got down on one knee. The moment was simple, emotional, and perfectly them. After they had time to take it all in, I stepped in and we spent the rest of the evening capturing engagement photos along the beach as the sun set—ending their proposal with a full golden hour session on the Northern California coast.
“Couldn’t have asked for a better photographer to capture this moment for us, can’t thank you enough!” -Myles
“You are amazing!! It was the best experience & I am so grateful. Thank you so much again” -Chrissy
