A Romantic Redwood Garden Party Wedding in Humboldt County
There are some places that are beautiful for a wedding, and then there are places that already hold a lifetime of meaning.
For Kaila, that place was home.
Josh and Kaila were married at the childhood home where Kaila grew up in Kneeland, California, surrounded by towering redwoods, gardens overflowing with flowers, and the people who have been woven into their lives for years.
Humboldt County gave them the perfect weather for a wedding day.
Soft fog drifted in and out of the redwoods throughout the afternoon, settling between the trees and giving everything that dreamy, ethereal feeling Northern California does so well. There was a little chill in the air, but instead of taking away from the day, it made everything feel even more intimate and cozy. People gathered a little closer, the white canopy tents felt a little warmer, and the entire property seemed tucked away from the rest of the world.
Against all those deep forest greens and soft gray skies, Kaila wore the most incredible brilliant red fitted wedding dress.
The color was stunning.
Instead of disappearing into the landscape, she absolutely glowed against it. It was romantic, unexpected, and completely her—a perfect beginning to a wedding that wasn't particularly interested in following tradition just for tradition's sake.
A Wedding Built Around the People They Love
What struck me most about Josh and Kaila's wedding wasn't any one beautiful detail.
It was how much of the day had been created by the people who love them.
Kaila's dad built the platform and arch where they would stand to exchange their vows. Their closest friends weren't placed into traditional roles as bridesmaids and groomsmen. Instead, they were invited to share personal messages during the ceremony.
It made the ceremony feel incredibly intimate.
Their friends spoke about them, their relationships, and the lives they had shared together before Josh and Kaila turned toward one another to exchange their own vows.
And their vows were extraordinary.
Both had written something thoughtful, poetic, and deeply heartfelt. Standing beneath the redwoods at Kaila's childhood home, they spoke words to one another that felt incredibly intentional and honest.
Their friends weren't just guests at this wedding. They were part of its heart.
And perhaps the sweetest example of that was waiting for everyone in the form of a magazine.
One of their friends had created an entire magazine dedicated to Josh and Kaila, filled with photographs, personal stories, memories, and contributions from their friends and family. Copies were handed out for guests to read throughout the celebration.
It was one of the most thoughtful gestures I've ever seen at a wedding.
There was something so special about watching people flip through the pages and read pieces of Josh and Kaila's story told by the people who knew them best.
This wasn't simply a wedding surrounded by friends.
It was a true celebration among friends.
A Garden Party Beneath the Redwoods
That same sense of personality carried into every part of the celebration.
The property had been transformed into a whimsical garden party beneath the redwoods, and the guests completely embraced it. Dresses, suits, flowers, and little pops of color filled the backyard while the gardens themselves seemed to have decided to show off at exactly the right time.
Everything was in bloom.
White canopy tents created an elegant place for everyone to gather for dinner, and an arbor with long streams of white ribbon created a dreamy entrance toward the area where guests had pitched tents to stay for the night.
There was something wonderfully romantic about it—celebrating late into the evening and then camping together beneath the trees rather than everyone simply driving away when the reception ended.
Their cake fit the day perfectly too, decorated with the sweetest little strawberries that somehow felt both playful and beautiful amongst all the garden-party details.
After the ceremony, Josh and Kaila crowned themselves in flowers, which may have been one of my favorite visual moments of the day.
Kaila in that incredible red dress, Josh beside her, both wearing flower crowns with the fog moving through the redwoods behind them—it felt like something out of a storybook.
A live band filled the evening with music. People danced. Friends laughed together. Everyone gathered beneath the tents as the temperature dropped, and the little chill in the air seemed to pull the entire celebration closer together.
There was a genuine happiness throughout the day that you can't manufacture for photographs.
You can only photograph it when it's there.
And it was everywhere.
A Redwood Destination Wedding That Felt Like Home
For couples dreaming of a destination wedding in the California redwoods, it's easy to understand why Humboldt County draws people here.
The ancient forests are breathtaking. The fog can turn an ordinary afternoon into something ethereal. The gardens, coastline, and wild Northern California landscape create a setting that feels completely different from a traditional wedding destination.
For couples searching for a Humboldt County redwood wedding or dreaming of creating their own Northern California destination wedding, I hope this one is a reminder that the most beautiful celebrations don't have to follow a formula.
Choose a place that means something.
Fill it with your people.
Keep the traditions you love and create new ones where you want to.
Because the redwoods may create an incredible backdrop, but it's everything that happens beneath them that becomes your story.
