A Barefoot Summer Elopement in the Redwoods | Arcata, California
Some evenings in the redwoods feel a little more magical than others. This August evening at Redwood Park in Arcata, California was one of those nights—warm sunshine, towering redwoods, and the most incredible beams of light pouring through the trees.
This young couple wanted their elopement to feel relaxed, playful, and completely like them. They showed up barefoot, ready to wander through the forest and enjoy the evening together. There was nothing stiff or overly formal about their time in the redwoods. They laughed, played, explored, and simply enjoyed being together.
The August sunshine was especially beautiful that evening. Because the light was coming through the trees at just the right angle, it created these long, brilliant beams that gave the forest an unusually warm golden glow. The redwoods were already breathtaking, but that light made everything feel almost enchanted.
We spent the evening moving through the forest and looking for pockets of light and interesting places to create portraits. I love when couples are willing to play and move rather than spending the entire session standing still and looking at the camera. Their energy made it so easy to photograph them naturally.
And then we found the swing.
She climbed on, grabbed the ropes with both hands, and swung higher and higher beneath the redwoods. From the right angle, it looked like she was flying straight over the forest. We captured an epic frame of her suspended above the towering trees, with the redwoods stretching out beneath her.
It was one of those photographs that you can't really plan. You just notice something beautiful happening and keep shooting.
The rest of the evening had that same playful feeling. Bare feet on the forest floor, warm sunlight on their faces, laughter between photographs, and the two of them completely comfortable being themselves.
That's one of my favorite things about photographing redwood elopements in Humboldt County. The forest gives you so much to work with, but it's the couple's connection that brings the photographs to life. The goal isn't to create a collection of stiff, perfect poses. It's to create photographs that bring you right back to how the evening actually felt.
For these two, it felt warm, carefree, romantic, and a little bit wild.
Just the two of them, barefoot beneath the redwoods, with August sunshine pouring through the trees. 🌲☀️🤍
