A Whimsical Redwood Maternity Session in Humboldt County
Some evenings in the redwoods feel almost too beautiful to be real, and this maternity session was one of those evenings. They traveled all the way from Southern California to Humboldt County for their maternity photos, hoping for that soft, ethereal redwood light—and somehow, they got exactly what they were dreaming of.
It was the most perfect summer day, with temperatures around 75 degrees and just enough warmth to make wandering through the forest feel comfortable. But the real magic happened as the evening light started pouring through the trees.
The sun filtered between the towering redwoods in long, glowing beams, catching the little bits of dust and tiny bugs floating through the air. Everything seemed to sparkle and move around them like little forest fairies. It was the kind of light I could dream about as a photographer and still not quite get as perfectly as it appeared that evening.
They were expecting their baby boy, Theodore, in just two months, and there was something especially sweet about photographing them during this little window of time before their family changes forever. We wandered through the redwoods slowly, taking advantage of the beautiful light and allowing the evening to unfold naturally.
For their session, they were hoping for something romantic, dreamy, and ethereal rather than overly posed—and the forest completely delivered. The combination of the towering redwoods, warm summer evening, soft haze, and glowing beams of light created an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
This is exactly why I love photographing maternity sessions in Humboldt County. The redwoods don't just provide a beautiful backdrop; they create an entire atmosphere. There is something peaceful about standing beneath trees that have been here for hundreds of years while celebrating a brand-new little life about to enter the world.
Theodore, you are already so loved. And what a beautiful place to begin telling your story. 🌲🤍
