16 Ways to Keep Your Wedding Fun From Start to Finish

As a wedding photographer, I've noticed something that always holds true: the most unforgettable weddings aren't necessarily the most expensive or elaborate—they're the ones where everyone is genuinely having the best time. When guests are smiling, laughing, dancing, and fully present, the entire day feels different. That joy is contagious. It creates an atmosphere that everyone remembers, and it shows up in every single photograph. If you're dreaming of a wedding filled with laughter, happy tears, packed dance floors, and photos that feel alive, here are some of my favorite ideas to help keep the energy high all day long.

(And don't skip #16...it's my favorite.) 🤍

1. Start the Dance Floor with One Big Group Photo

One of my favorite tricks has almost nothing to do with the actual photo. Once dancing begins, have your DJ invite everyone onto the dance floor for one large group picture. The photo itself is great, but the real magic is that you’ve already gathered everyone together. Instead of trying to convince people to come dance later, they’re already there—and many will stay once the music starts.

2. Avoid Slow Songs Once the Dance Party Begins

Once the party is going strong, avoid stopping the energy with slow songs. As soon as guests leave the dance floor for a slow song, many don’t come back. Keeping upbeat music playing maintains the momentum and creates an energetic dance floor all night long.

3. Keep Formal Dances Short

Your first dance, father-daughter dance, mother-son dance, and other formal dances don’t need to be four minutes long.Keeping them around 60–90 seconds makes them feel meaningful without dragging on. Your guests stay engaged, and you’ll still have all the beautiful moments captured without everyone checking their watches.

4. Keep Speeches Short and Sweet

Heartfelt speeches are wonderful, but several long speeches filled with inside jokes can slow the entire evening. If you have speeches, encourage everyone to keep them concise, meaningful, and focused. You’ll keep your guests engaged and your reception moving.

5. Eliminate Long Bar Lines

One of the easiest ways to keep guests engaged is to avoid long waits for drinks. Consider serving cocktails immediately after the ceremony where guests can simply grab one as they walk into cocktail hour instead of standing in line. Less waiting means more mingling, more conversations, and more fun.

6. Consider Inviting the “In-Between” Kids

If you’re planning an adults-only wedding, consider making an exception for teenagers around 16–18 years old. They’re often the first ones on the dance floor, the biggest hype crew, and they bring incredible energy that encourages everyone else to join in.

7. Your Guests Will Follow Your Energy

Your guests take their cues from you. If you’re laughing, dancing, talking with guests, and having the time of your life, they’ll do the same. Don’t spend your evening worrying about whether everyone else is having fun. Enjoy your wedding. Your joy is contagious.

8. Wait Until After the Ceremony to Drink

Celebrate—but consider waiting until after the ceremony and portraits before drinking too much. A bridal party that’s having fun is wonderful. A bridal party that can’t walk in a straight line or stay focused often makes portraits much harder. Waiting just a little longer helps everyone look and feel their best in your photos.

9. Create a Dance Floor Fun Station

Want unforgettable reception photos? Set up a small station with fun accessories like face gems, glitter, funky sunglasses, fun hats, glow wands, and other playful props. People naturally loosen up when there’s something fun to grab, and the dance floor photos become even more memorable.

10. You Don’t Need Your Photographer There Until Midnight

Many couples think they need dance floor coverage until the very end. In reality, the best dance floor photos almost always happen during the first 30 minutes after open dancing begins. Everyone is excited, fresh, and full of energy. After that, people are usually much sweatier, and things can become a little sloppier. If you’re trying to maximize your photography coverage and budget, ending coverage around 30 minutes after dancing starts is often the sweet spot.

11. Exchange Gifts and Letters Before the Ceremony

One of the sweetest moments I photograph is when couples exchange gifts or handwritten letters before seeing each other. Whether you’re doing a first look or waiting until the ceremony aisle, these quiet moments create genuine emotion and beautiful anticipation that photographs so well.

12. Plan a Bridesmaids First Look

These are some of my favorite images every wedding day. Once you’re completely ready, surprise your bridesmaids with your wedding dress. Their reactions are priceless, emotional, and often hilarious. They’re moments you’ll treasure forever.

13. Keep Family Photos Organized

Family portraits can quickly become the most stressful part of the day if they’re not planned well. Keep your list to around 10–15 groupings and only include the combinations you truly want included in your wedding album.

Organize your list clearly by family, such as:

  • Bride with Mom (Debbie)

  • Bride with Dad (John)

  • Bride with Mom and Dad (Debbie and John)

  • Groom with Mom (Laura)

  • Groom with Dad (Sean)

Have one designated “caller” with a loud voice who knows your family well and can quickly gather each group. This one person can save you so much time and keep everyone moving. For less important combinations, let family members capture those with their phones later. Your photography time is valuable, and thoughtful planning here keeps your day running smoothly.

14. Pass Around a Camcorder

Give a camcorder—or even a small digital camera—to your funniest, most outgoing friend and ask them to interview guests throughout the evening. Capture marriage advice, funny stories, dance floor moments, and candid conversations. Later, hire an editor (Fiverr is a great place to look for an editor) to turn everything into a fun highlight film you’ll treasure for years.

15. Consider a First Look

A first look isn’t required, but it provides something incredibly valuable: certainty. Wedding timelines often get compressed after the ceremony because family photos run long, transportation is delayed, or guests take longer than expected to congratulate you. When you choose to do a first look, your couple portraits are already finished before the ceremony. It gives you peace of mind knowing you’ve already captured beautiful portraits together, no matter how the rest of the day unfolds.

16. Create A Wedding Photo Challenge With A QR Code

One of my favorite newer wedding trends is placing a QR code on each reception table that guests can scan to instantly upload the photos and videos they take throughout the day to a shared wedding gallery. Your photographer will beautifully capture all of the big moments, but your guests will document an entirely different side of the day—the hilarious selfies, candid conversations, dance floor antics, behind-the-scenes moments, and little memories happening while you're across the room. Those are moments you'll treasure just as much. To make it even more fun, turn it into a competition! Let your guests know that at the end of the wedding, you'll choose your favorite photo (or collection of photos), and the winner will receive a $100 gift card. Everyone loves a little friendly competition, and it's amazing how much more engaged people become when there's a prize involved. You'll likely end the night with hundreds of extra photos and videos, giving you an even richer collection of memories from every perspective. It's a simple idea that keeps guests interacting throughout the reception—and one you'll be so thankful you did.
