Real Elopement Day Schedules that have worked!

What you should know:

Almost all of my elopements are planned around beautiful light. In the redwoods, I generally aim to begin about three hours before sunset, depending on the season and the grove. On cloudy days, when plans are simple and flexible, I may recommend starting one to two hours earlier to make the most of the available light.

Before choosing a schedule, think about what you want your experience to include: a ceremony with an officiant, private vows, portraits after a courthouse wedding, or a combination of these. You might want to stay entirely in the redwoods or explore multiple locations, ending at the coast near sunset. A cake cutting, picnic, first look, or specific portraits—such as a cathedral veil draped over the two of you—can all be worked into the plan with enough time.

A few things to consider as you look through these examples:

  • Hair and makeup: Late-morning appointments that finish in the early afternoon often work well. Depending on your start time, finishing two to five hours before photography begins can leave room to eat, get dressed, travel, and enjoy a little breathing room. Confirm the photography timeline before booking your appointment.

  • Your ceremony time: Once an officiant is booked, moving the ceremony may be difficult. I recommend discussing timing with me first so we can plan your ceremony and portraits around the light.

  • Travel between locations: Driving, parking, walking to each spot, and getting in and out of the car in wedding attire all take time. These transitions need a place in your schedule. I love to help my clients with this! So there’s no need to stress!

  • Guests: If you’re inviting loved ones, allow time for their arrival, the ceremony, and group photos. Consider how comfortably everyone can walk to your chosen location.

  • Personal details: Let me know about meaningful traditions, special items, or particular photos you’re hoping for during our planning call so I can allow time for them.

  • Weather and flexibility: A little flexibility can make a beautiful difference, especially with changing coastal weather. Any adjustments will be discussed with you and coordinated around your booked vendors.

The schedules below are examples from real elopement days. Your timeline will be tailored to your locations, the light, and what matters most to you. During our planning call, I’ll help you choose the exact spots and finalize your schedule and location pins before your day.

Stay in the Redwoods · 2 Hours

Simple and intimate—just the two of you among the redwoods, with your experience centered around beautiful light. A little flexibility with timing on the day allows me to guide you to the best light for your ceremony and portraits. Hair and makeup can be scheduled in the morning, leaving the afternoon open for photos. Some couples choose to legally marry at the local courthouse the day before or that morning, then share private vows and portraits in the redwoods.
