A Magical 15th Birthday Photoshoot in the California Redwoods

For Syanna’s 15th birthday, her mom wanted to give her something a little magical.

At the last minute, they decided to turn her birthday into an adventure—a road trip through California, all the way up to Oregon and back, stopping at fun and beautiful places along the way. But Syanna’s mom had one surprise planned that she didn’t know about: a photoshoot with me in the Northern California redwoods.

When her mom reached out, she told me she wanted the session to feel like a fairy princess. Whimsical, magical, and something that would make her 15th birthday feel completely different from a traditional portrait session.

And thankfully, the light showed up for us.

We had just enough sunshine filtering through the redwoods to give everything that soft glow I love. The light came through the trees, catching her dress and creating those little pockets of warmth that can completely transform a forest portrait.

We spent the session creating a mix of whimsical portraits and natural movement, letting the redwoods and sunlight become part of the story. It felt less like traditional birthday photos and more like stepping into a little fairytale in the middle of their road trip.

I love that these photographs will always be connected to this adventure with her mom—the year she turned 15, traveled through Northern California and Oregon, and got to be a fairy princess in the redwoods for an afternoon.

Sometimes the best birthday gift isn’t something you take home in a box. It’s getting to step into the story for a little while and having the photographs to remember it.
