A Fairytale in the Redwoods | Henry & Maria’s Elopement Portraits at Redwood Park and Wedding Rock
Golden light pouring through the redwoods, bare feet on the forest floor, and a sword worthy of a Lord of the Rings love story—Henry and Maria’s elopement portraits felt like pages from a fairytale.
They had married at Wedding Rock the day before. Since I wasn’t available to photograph their ceremony, they chose to meet me the following day for wedding portraits. It was such a beautiful way to continue celebrating, with time to explore both the redwoods and the coast together.
And the weather could not have been more perfect!
A Whimsical, Lord of the Rings Inspired Session
Henry and Maria brought a specific theme to their photos: romantic, whimsical, and inspired by fairytales and Lord of the Rings. With towering redwoods around them and a sword they brought along, the setting fit their story so beautifully.
I love when couples bring something personal to their wedding portraits. Those details give us something to play with and make the photographs feel even more like them. For Henry and Maria, the sword added a little adventure to all that romance.
Brilliant Light at Redwood Park
We began at Redwood Park in Arcata, where brilliant sunlight streamed through the trees. The light caught in the forest around them, creating the most beautiful glow beneath the redwoods.
Maria went barefoot for most of the session, which felt so fitting for the whimsical feeling they wanted. There was something so lovely about her wedding dress against the forest floor, surrounded by those enormous trees.
These are the moments I love photographing: a couple close together, beautiful light, and a setting that already feels a little magical. With Henry and Maria’s fairytale inspiration, it all came together so naturally.
Wedding Portraits at Wedding Rock
After the redwoods, we headed to Wedding Rock, where they had exchanged vows just one day earlier. Returning for portraits made this part of the session especially meaningful. They were back at the place where they had become husband and wife, now with time to enjoy it together in a different way.
The coastal light was incredible. Sunlight streamed through the rocks, creating glowing pockets of light that were so beautiful to photograph. After the warmth of the forest, the beach gave us a whole new setting for their story.
From the towering redwoods to the rocky Northern California coast, we had the most beautiful light at every turn.
A Little More Time to Celebrate
Henry and Maria’s session is such a lovely example of what wedding portraits can look like on the day after your ceremony. You can put your wedding clothes back on, visit somewhere meaningful, and make room for photographs at a time when the light is beautiful.
For these two, that meant bare feet in the redwoods, a sword, a little Lord of the Rings inspiration, and an evening back where their marriage began.
Their wedding day had already happened, but there was still plenty of fairytale left to photograph.
